Medical Errors in a Hospital Setting

Lewis & Tompkins, P.C. Team

We rely on hospital care during our darkest times. No one can anticipate when a serious injury or illness can strike, leading to surgical procedures and an extended hospital stay.

We rely on our physicians and other medical professionals in the hospital to provide us with good care. Sometimes, however, adequate care is not provided leading to medical errors in a hospital setting.

Types of medical errors

Sometimes the wrong medication is given at a hospital. This could be the result of human error or lack of communication. Being given the wrong medication could lead to further harm. Not only are you given something that could have negative side effects, but your original ailment is still going untreated.

Another medical error involves a hospital stay that is not long enough. If you are rushed out of the hospital, you may not be given information on how to care for yourself at home. If so, your condition could become worse necessitating further medical care.

Surgical errors can also occur in a hospital setting. For example, the wrong side or body part could be operated on, or a surgical instrument could be left inside the body. These injuries can be very damaging and usually necessitate further surgical procedures.

Medical negligence

When a medical error occurs, it may form the basis of a medical malpractice claim. Physicians are bound by a standard of care, which generally is the level of care a competent physician would provide in similar circumstances. If you were the victim of medical negligence in Washington D.C., Virginia or Maryland, you will want to learn more about your options for compensation so you can get back on your feet financially.

Every time I call, I speak to a lawyer. The staff is a great help, but it is nice to know that you all will talk to clients and answer questions.
