One-Third of Doctors Say Staffing Issues Cause Medical Mistakes

For people in Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia, seeking medical care is important when there is a health concern. There is an understandable belief that physicians and the supposedly trained staff will know their role, do their jobs and provide the proper treatments. Unfortunately, medical missteps are troublingly common and there is a litany of reasons for that. Often, people believe that the errors stem from a misdiagnosis, a medication mistake, wrong-site surgery or other blunder. While these do occur with a worrisome regularity, every aspect of medical care must be scrutinized to assess why mistakes happened. One that was recently revealed as part of a study centered on staffing shortages.

Staffing a concern to more than one in three physicians

Researchers amassed data from Western medical professionals and found that 34% of those who responded stated that staffing shortages were substantial contributor to medical mistakes being on the rise. Three in four say patients are expressing concern about the care they are receiving. Fifty-eight percent say that patients’ mental health is being negatively impacted because of it. This is also hindering the mental state of physicians themselves.

Sixty-five percent say they feel frustration; 54% feel burnout; 52% do not think they get the appreciation they deserve; and half have said the stress led to them contemplating leaving medicine entirely. The recent health challenges have been blamed for the lack of staffing in almost all the nations that were assessed in the study, but the feelings of burnout were a major problem. Up to 40% cited it. Patients are forced to wait longer for care, have worse care, see delays in getting necessary treatment and are confronted with diagnostic mistakes. The types of practices that these doctors are involved in ran the gamut from general practitioners to surgeons and critical care workers.
